"I had a dream one night, in which a fully finished Ganapati sculpture appeared to me. It was perfect as it was faithful to my early sketches and represented the vision I was trying to get across. I used the sketches as a starting point to approach the 3-dimensional piece, which then became my canvas. My early training in art school greatly helped, since my teachers often assigned the creation of 3-D sets particularly during the Ganesh festival. Miniature painting as a decorative and story-telling art form has always fascinated me, and the thought came to mind that something very classical, like the miniature, could be incorporated into my contemporary work. The decorative thus becomes part of the abstract, and the 'seen' or common form of Ganapati, as part of the unseen." - Sujata Bajaj

Sujata Bajaj

(b.1958)
Born in Jaipur, Sujata Bajaj received her Master’s Degree in painting in Pune and later received her Ph.D from there. In 1988 she received a scholarship from the French government to study at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris. She has also worked at Studio Claude Viseux, Paris. She is the recipient of several awards including the Bombay Art Society Award and the Maharashtra State Art Award. She has had shows in India, the UK, France, Norway including the ones with Saffronart and The Guild Gallery, Mumbai, 2004. Sujata Bajaj spends her time between Pune, Norway and Paris.
