Mari Kim

(b.1977)
Born in 1977, Mari Kim is a Korean contemporary artist and animator from Seoul, South Korea. She completed her Master's Degree in Creative Media in the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia (2006) before specializing in Digital Art and moving back to Korea where she in addition to her art and career as a video director, worked as an adjunct professor for the Catholic University of Korea since 2007. She uses the language of Manga, Disney, and Pop-Art to make her glossily realized paintings. Her images are derived from a rich mixture of Western and Eastern cultural references, producing pieces which explicitly reflect a pop sensibility and aesthetics. Her works are part of the collections of Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeongnam Art Museum, and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Notable exhibitions of her works include Child Play, Television 12 Gallery, Seoul (2011); Famous Show, Dubai Opera, Dubai (2012), The Premiere U.S. Solo Exhibition of Mari Kim, Art Aqua, Miami (2013); Synchronicity, Shine Artists, London (2014); Famous Show, Berlin (2014); Famous Eyedoll, AP Contemporary Gallery, Hong Kong (2014); Romance in the Age of Chaos, JR Gallery, Berlin (2015); Days of Future Past, Pontone Gallery, London (2016); Art Miami, Miami (2018); From Miami to London, Pontone Gallery, London (2019).
