(1911 - 1996) Born in 1911, in Karnataka, K. K. Hebbar completed his Diploma in Painting from the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 1938. He also taught art at this institute between 1940 and 1945. Between 1949 and 1950, Hebbar studied painting at the Academy Julian, and graphics at the Ecole Estinne, in Paris. Some of the significant shows that his works have been featured in include the Venice Biennale, 1955; the Sao Paulo Biennale, 1959; the Tokyo Biennale; and ‘Art Now in India’ in London and Brussels, 1965. Hebbar was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 1961 and with the Padma Bhushan in 1989. He died at the age of 85 in 1996.
