The company, founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier in Switzerland, initially dedicated to the field of aviation, focused on the development of technology complementary to the exacting nature of the industry. The brand made incredible headway in the world of chronographs and wristwatches earlier in the century when Willy Breitling, grandson to founder Léon Breitling, recognized the fascination flight would hold and began producing onboard chronographs focusing on technical precision, reliability, and durability. Through the brand, he introduced an onboard chronograph for airplanes in 1936, which would later be used by over 30 airlines. In 1939, Breitling signed a contract with the British Air Ministry to make flight chronographs for the Royal Air Force - sealing its association with aircraft navigation and invention.

By 1953, the brand started introducing different lines to diversify their products and target different parts of the market, producing wristwatches in precious metals and elegant shapes along with their signature rugged pilot and military timepieces.

To this day, Breitling is the only major watch brand, whose entire watch production is COSC certified. In addition to the technical superiority of the COSC certification, every Breitling timepiece is crafted from top quality titanium, steel, 18-karat gold, or the most precious of metals - platinum.
