Najat Makki

(b. 1953) Born in Dubai, Makki has been at the forefront of the Emirati Art Scene for 40 years. She studied at the College of Fine Arts in Cairo and graduated with a diploma in 1996 before receiving an MA in relief and metal design. She completed her education in 2001, gaining a PhD in Metal Coins, also from the College of Fine Arts in Cairo. She has exhibited regularly in the UAE, especially in Dubai and Sharjah at the Sharjah Biennales and abroad in the Syrian Biennale in 1999 (where she received a silver medal), at the GCC Biennale in Qatar, as well as several times in Egypt, Kuwait and in Germany. An active teacher, she trains students in the UAE. Her work can be found in the collections of the National Council of Kuwait, in the Sharjah Museum of Art, in the College of Fine Arts in Cairo, the National Museum of Jordan and in the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation.She is one of the members of Dubai cultural Council and one of the pioneers of contemporary art scene in the region.
