LOT ESSAY
Jayashree Chakravarty's paintings are mostly autobiographical. Her own personal style is influenced by French impressionist and Byzantine mosaic design but her preoccupations and concerns in her art are on the changing natural habitat and bodies of water in the Indian cities.
Chakravarty's canvases are often bustling, crowded and teeming with energetic imagery and line. In this work, she has masterfully maintained her characteristic use of cartographic and figural themes that had dominated her paintings in the 1990's while using superimposed forms to reflect the unity of man with nature in both conventional and figurative level.
