"They speak of Allah, but their function is to praise, rather than simply to name. That is, the basis of the image is a dynamic response to the name of God, where the sacred name is placed in a context. The context is a sura, or a fragment of a sura taken from the Qu'ran. This allows for a more elaborate and complex development of visual imagery based on the movements of the artist's hand."
