Satish Gujral was born in Punjab and trained at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore, the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, and the Palacio National de Belle Arts in Mexico. In the early 1950s, he served as an apprentice to Diego Riviera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, both renowned Mexican muralists. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Vibhushan in 1998, and in 2004 he received the Lalit Kala Ratna Puraskar from the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. He has won the National Award thrice: twice for painting and once for sculpture. He has also been honored by the states of Delhi and Punjab as well as by Santiniketan with its highest honor, the ‘Desikottama’. Several solo and group exhibitions of his works have been held around the world including in New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo, Rome, Mexico City, and New York. Gujral passed away on March 26, 2020, in New Delhi at the age of 94.
