Born in Digboi, Assam, Ashim Purkayashta completed his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Painting from Vishwabharti University, Santiniketan, in 1992 and 1994 respectively. Some of his recent solo shows include “Borderline”, at Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi, in 2006; “Dilli Dilwalon Ki” at the Visual Art Gallery and Anant Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2006; “Attached Wings” at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai, and Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi, in 2005; “Gandhi/Man Without Specs” at Khoj, New Delhi, in 2001; and “Insured Home” at the Center of International Modern Art (CIMA), Kolkata, in 2001. His works have also been part of many group shows, including “Bapu” at Saffronart, Mumbai in 2009; “Where in the World”, at Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi, in 2008-09; “Mutant Beauty”, at Anant Art Cente, New Delhi, 2008-09, “Ghost of Souza”, at Aicon Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008; “India Crossing” at Studio La Cita, Verona, in 2008; and “Polyphonies” at Gallerie Hosp, Tirol, Austria, in 2007-08. In 2004, Purkayashta received the Pollock Krasner Award, and 2001 and 1993, he received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award. The artist lives and works in New Delhi.
